Path along the Exe Valley

The Upper Exe

Exford and Room Hill - Approx 7 miles

The Route: Start the walk from the car park in Exford. The route leads from the bottom of the car park past some workshops and through a wicket gate. You then walk along the edge of two fields before turning right to cross the river towards Court Farm.

Almost immediately after crossing the bridge turn left down a track sign posted to Withypool. Follow the track which shortly bends right in front of the farm house. The track then continues straight on and through a field gate in front of you sign posted Room Hill.

The path is well marked continuing through the fields before turning left and heading down between a fence and a hedge to cross a small brook before ascending steeply to a field gate at the top.

Continue across the field with spectacular views to your left over Exford before turning right after passing through another field gate. Head up and through some bracken then through a gap at the end of a row of beech trees.

Continue on, keeping the hedge row to your right, then shortly the track divides. Here take the left hand fork which crosses the head of a valley.

You reach another junction of paths where you keep left towards Winsford. The well marked track soon peters out into rough pasture land. Here head across the field towards the top of a valley and a hedge row thatís on your horizon.

The track becomes more distinct as it continues down steeply into the valley reaching the banks of the river Exe at the bottom. Continue along until you reach a ford. You can cross the river at the ford or continue along to cross at Nethercote Bridge.

If you wish to cross at the bridge go through the field gate to the right and follow the river bank avoiding the temptation to follow the more well worn track across the field.

Keep to the line of the fence and where the more distinct track turns up a hill veer off to the left on a smaller path through some bracken and into a lightly wooded area. Follow the river bank, the path becoming more obvious again.

Continue along finally reaching a wicket gate, turn left here to cross the bridge. Immediately after crossing turn left following the permitted path to Exford through the water meadows and back to the ford.

When you reach the ford go through a field gate and turn right up a hill for a short distance before reaching another major path, here turn left. Continue along the well defined route following the river Exe for about a mile finally reaching Lincombe farm. Here go past the farmhouse and head for a gate across the yard.

Go through the gate and almost immediately turn left through a gate onto the footpath sign posted back to Exford. Follow the path around the field to a gate in the far left hand corner. Here donít go through the gate but turn right and head for a style in the corner. Follow the path through the fields marked by the yellow way markers up over a small hill before descending back towards Court Farm. At the bottom of the hill go through a field gate and turn right and retrace your steps back to the car park.
